This website is devoted to stories and opportunities for U.S. parishes reaching out to peoples in other nations. There are many instances of sending medical missioners, volunteer doctors, and so forth. Recently, our family got this process exactly backwards. It all started in 1996 when my youngest brother Billy headed up a construction crew to do a project in the Dominican Republic.

While on that job, brother Bill had occasion to schedule an appointment with a local doctor. To make a fairly short story VERY short, that native-born doctor spoke no English, and my brother spoke no Spanish. But they communicated exceptionally well, and the Dominican Republic has lost a practicing doctor, at least for the time being. The good doctor now lives in my old hometown of Owensboro, Kentucky and is my newest sister-in-law!

Candida Onley, MD, has learned English, and they are expecting their first child in July 1998. Because of our new family connection to the Dominican Republic, I'll be watching to see how it may fit into the purpose and vision of this website!
