November 2003 NOTE:
This page is one of the most important resources of the Parish Without Borders website. Most of this work was done in early 2000, and I find that a few of the links from that time are not working now. So, in addition to researching new resources, I'm trying to find out the status of some of the following listings.

    Evaluating Parish Social Ministry
An Assessment Tool Kit for Parish Staff and Leaders
Office for Social Justice, Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis

Want to make your parish an effective agent for justice? Learn the skills, get the resources, make a difference.

This assessment tool is intended to assist Catholic parishes in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis in evaluating and improving their social ministry and social justice programs. It is rooted in the assumption that the Church's social mission should be central and integral to parish life, not tangential or optional. As the U.S. bishops said in their 1993 statement on parish social ministry:

“We need to build local communities of faith where our social teaching is central, not fringe; where social ministry is integral, not optional; where it is the work of every believer, not just the mission of a few committed people and committees.” (Communities of Salt & Light, p. 4)
By design, this tool examines the Church's social mission in various areas of parish life -- worship, education, social concerns, etc. This tool can be used in its entirety by parish staff and key leadership committees, or it can be divided into distinct sections, each of which can be used by an appropriate leadership group within the parish. Follow the links below for individual sections. (The complete assessment tool is available in booklet form by calling the Office for Social Justice at (651) 291-4477.

Editor's Note: It is well worth the time of all parish leaders to look at this practical online resource VERY closely.

    NEW From Seattle:

Seattle Archdiocese Religious Education (Social Justice)

In preparation for the Jubilee Year 2000 and in response to the publication of "Sharing Catholic Social Teaching: Challenges and Directions" by the United States Catholic Conference, the Archdiocese of Seattle has initiated a project to develop educational resources which may be used by principals, directors of religious education, Catholic school teachers and parish catechists. Each month, the Religious Education page in the Catholic Northwest Progress will carry a background paper on one of the principles of Catholic social teaching. Lesson plans for primary, intermediate, middle school and secondary grades will be posted on this site, along with a facilitator's guide.

    Columban
The Columban Mission Education Office is committed to assisting the Church in understanding the missionary dimension of our baptism. This is done by creating mission awareness through educational programs. These programs aim at fostering a missionary dimension in the lives of students, teachers and our Catholic people. They invite participants to become aware of their privilege and call to share fully in the mission of the Church. Using videos and good catechetical means, these programs are available for ages kindergarten through adults. In the Scriptures, Jesus invited his disciples to "Come and See." The Columban materials also extend the invitation to "Come and See" where Jesus lives today Come and See!

The Come and See! program is available without charge as a service of the Columban Fathers to the Church of the United States. The following link includes an online order form as well as program outlines.

    World Hunger: a Global Concern

    World Hunger:
    A Global Concern

    Created by Kathleen B. Carlisle
    in Baltimore, Maryland

This online student-involvement project is well presented and seems readily adaptable to virtually any age group. The final phase of the students' project is to produce a pamphlet about what they learned, and they must decide to whom they should distribute the pamphlet they create. How about to every family in your parish! Well worth a look!
